Let's Design FONTS for WINNIPEG!
What is the Winnipeg’s font, PEG FONT? Do we have one? Do we want one? Can we have one? Can a thing as small as a font represent a city?
If,
‘Typography (from the Greek words τύπος typos "form" and γράφειν graphein "to write") is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make the language it forms most appealing to transparent learning and recognition.[1]
Then, yes!
Typeface is one of the most pervasive and powerful agent of our culture. A brief online scan will reveal that only 8 cities in the world have their official typeface: Chattanooga – Chatype, London – Johnston, Berlin – BMF Change, Milan – Milano City, Eindhoven – Eindhoven, Stockholm – Stockholm Type, Minneapolis and St. Paul – Twin, Berkeley — Rennie Mackintosh. Many more urban identities are unofficially tied to typefaces, i.e. Helvetica in New York subways and Frutiger in Paris.
“When typefaces get attached to cities,” explains Dan Rhatigan, a New York-based type designer, “it’s because typefaces become part of people’s everyday experience. People don’t identify typeface necessarily; very few of us can look at something and say what it is, but it has an effect, it’s a personality.”[2]
In this spirit, we are calling for a FONT FEST for Winnipeg. To design and/or identify fonts that speaks of Winnipeg, its past, present and future ambitions and characters. With this call, we are forwarding the idea that Winnipeg is a Font City, a city who pays attention to detail and believes that small things can inspire bigger changes.
“A new typeface in itself isn’t going to change a city,” says Bailey. “But it might help change the mindset of the people in a city and inspire them to make the change themselves.”[3]
